I agree, how could they not smell anything, especially in a heating duct. Wouldn't that carry the smell everywhere?

If it was the outlet pipe there would not be any smell inside the building as the air would have been forced up and outwards many yards above the rooftops..... and he would not have rotted in the normal manner...what a way to go dehydration a long slow death....
