Three Thrown From Vehicle Alive With Hands Severed, Silao, Guanajuato, 2020
On the night of December 11, 2020, two men and a woman in their early twenties were pushed from a moving vehicle on the Silao-Trejo highway near La Estrella, Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico. Their hands had all been amputated, with the six severed hands placed beside them in a black bag containing a cardboard sign bearing the signature of the Grupo Elite of the CJNG cartel and accusing them of theft. Passersby found all three alive, their eyes taped shut and their feet tied. Paramedics said the amputations were recent enough that the hands could possibly be reattached. Some outlets reported the woman was pregnant. Authorities never confirmed the allegation on the sign, and reports said it was uncertain whether CJNG carried out the attack or had been set up by a rival. Why'd the cartel decide to keep them alive, albeit handsless, rather than just kill them? Did they only commit a mexican misdemeanor or is this a fresh new tactic to induce fear?
