On Friday, June 19, 2020, a Honda Civic heading from Kota Kinabalu to Papar reportedly lost control at Km 22 of Jalan Papar Lama near Kampung Kawang in Papar district, Sabah, Malaysia. It entered the opposite lane and collided head-on with a three-tonne lorry. The Civic driver, a woman in her 30s, along with a female passenger in her 40s and a male passenger in his 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene at about 12:30 pm. The lorry driver sustained minor injuries to his hands and legs, while his passenger escaped injury. Police classified the investigation as reckless and dangerous driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act. Press reports did not identify the victims. Residents later attributed the crash to unclear signs along the road, where a further collision occurred at Km 23 within a day.

PAPAR: Three people were killed in a collision of a car and a lorry at Km 22, Jalan Papar Lama-Kota Kinabalu, near Kampung Kawang, Friday.
District Police Chief DSP Batholomew said the incident occurred about 12.30pm when a Honda Civic driven by a woman, believed to be in her 30s, heading to Papar from Kota Kinabalu with two other companions lost control and entered the opposite lane.

The lorry involved in the crash that killed three people.

“The car collided with a lorry driven by a man in his 50s who was travelling towards Kota Kinabalu from Papar with another man in his 20s.

“All three in the car, including another woman in her 40s and a man in his 20s, succumbed to severe head and body injuries on the spot,” he said, adding the lorry driver suffered injuries to his hand and leg while his passenger escaped unscathed.
The bodies were brought to the Papar Hospital for post mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The Papar Fire and Rescue Department dispatched eight personnel led by Senior Officer Sulaiman Menin to the scene and extricated the victims who were pinned in the vehicle but they were later pronounced dead.
