Not all people or civilizations are alike. Values differ among geographic locations. Americans in particular are far and away guilty of believing that your values are shared among all on this planet.

That is absolutely true. Take, for example, that within many sub-Saharan African societies it is quite commonplace for people to choose to feed themselves before feeding any number of their dependent children simply because they - parents - need to survive in order to provide for their remaining children.
In knee-jerk reaction to this, many westerners are outraged when exposed to this phenomenon simply because they are oblivious to the material conditions that often compel people to essentially allow their children to starve to death.
