Re: Them Bones (5ème Partie)
High school and college students in Russia spend their summers on field trips, digging up lost soldiers, both German and Russian, and repatriating them. I understand they have returned over 10,000 German soldiers, and an unknown. but huge, number of Russian soldiers. Unlike the other Allied forces, the Russians did not spend any effort or time trying to find dead Russian soldiers. Russia is so big, with so few people, that there are still thousands of undiscovered battle sites. Back in the early 2000's, they discovered a completely intact FW-190 fighter plane. Apparently it took a hit in an oil line, and the German pilot landed in a meadow, removed the compass from the aircraft so he could use it to head west towards the German lines, but was captured shortly after. By the time it was found, the meadow had turned into a forest. They took the aircraft apart, and I understand it is undergoing restoration right now. The pics I saw showed it in nearly perfect condition. The pilot had closed the canopy after he removed the compass, so everything was still in the cockpit just as he left it. Talk about an eerie relic. You can watch some of these recovery videos on Youtube, as the Russian students rely on funding from U.S. British, and French citizens to finance their expeditions, as they get no money from the Russian government.
