5. Poland, Article dated 12th October 2021:

Quote:
In Zęblewo, in the Szemud commune, archaeologists discovered the remains of German soldiers from the Second World War.

A dog tag, buttons, a mask tin, a razor and human bones were discovered by archaeologists on one of the arable fields in Zęblewo in the Szemud commune. The found remains are the remains of four German soldiers from the Second World War. After the exhumation works are completed, the remains will be transferred to the German soldiers' cemetery near Szczecin.

During the 6 years of the Second World War, tens of millions of people died. Zakopane, the remains of war victims can still be found, among others in Kashubia. In October, archaeologists discovered the bones of German soldiers on one of the arable fields in the village of Zęblewo in the Szemud commune. The exhumation work is scheduled to end on Tuesday, October 12.

- Earlier, we carried out exhumation works in Lewin [line commune - add. ed.]. When we talked to the locals about other graves, they pointed to this place in Zęblewo - says in an interview with Dziennik Bałtycki archaeologist Maciej Stromski , head of the exhumation works.

In total, archaeologists dug up the remains of four soldiers.

- It's also an interesting story. The owner of the farm told us that his father had told him about two buried soldiers. It was also a surprise to him that we found four remains. It was probably the case that two of them were buried later, the archaeologist believes .

Stromski explains that the equipment that was found with them indicates that these are the remains of German soldiers from the Second World War.

- We found a dog tag next to one of the soldiers. I hope that thanks to this we will be able to establish his data. And if his descendants are alive, it will also be possible to establish his family, explains the exhumation work manager . - In addition, we found uniform buttons typical of a German soldier's outfit and a mask box - the archaeologist is enumerating .

For the inhabitants of Zęblewo, the discovery is not shocking
- I heard about one German. He was shot here - one of the elderly inhabitants of Zęblewo, Mr. Alfons , tells us . - It was in March 1945. In our village, Russian soldiers made their headquarters. One of the German soldiers escaped from the bushes across the field. The Russian took the rifle and started firing at it. And this German just fell in this field.

- I believe that there are war graves or graves in every town in Kashubia. Maybe they're not visible. Information about their location may be in the memory of the inhabitants. Therefore, there is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of people to be found. Hence my appeal that if anyone knows about such places, he should provide this information in order to enable a dignified burial in the cemetery - encourages archaeologist Maciej Stromski .

After the exhumation works, including photographic documentation, are completed, the remains from Ząbewo will be transported to the German Soldiers' War Cemetery in Glinna in the commune of Stary Czarnów near Szczecin.

Re: Them Bones (5ème Partie)

High school and college students in Russia spend their summers on field trips, digging up lost soldiers, both German and Russian, and repatriating them. I understand they have returned over 10,000 German soldiers, and an unknown. but huge, number of Russian soldiers. Unlike the other Allied forces, the Russians did not spend any effort or time trying to find dead Russian soldiers. Russia is so big, with so few people, that there are still thousands of undiscovered battle sites. Back in the early 2000's, they discovered a completely intact FW-190 fighter plane. Apparently it took a hit in an oil line, and the German pilot landed in a meadow, removed the compass from the aircraft so he could use it to head west towards the German lines, but was captured shortly after. By the time it was found, the meadow had turned into a forest. They took the aircraft apart, and I understand it is undergoing restoration right now. The pics I saw showed it in nearly perfect condition. The pilot had closed the canopy after he removed the compass, so everything was still in the cockpit just as he left it. Talk about an eerie relic. You can watch some of these recovery videos on Youtube, as the Russian students rely on funding from U.S. British, and French citizens to finance their expeditions, as they get no money from the Russian government.
