Thai Woman Killed by a Box Jellyfish off Koh Phangan, Thailand, July 2015
A 31 year old Thai woman from Bangkok died after being stung by a box jellyfish while night swimming off Ban Tai at about 8pm on Friday, July 31, 2015. She had been visiting Koh Phangan with friends and was already dead when police were notified at 9.30pm. Local reports identified her as Chayanan Surin, also spelled Chayanun. The death was Koh Phangan's second fatal box jellyfish sting in less than a year, following the death of a five year old French boy there in August 2014.  ·  ·  ·  · |

Have gotten minor stings from jellyfish several times. It is like being touched with something red hot. Usually it's just a sting or two. This looks like she got wrapped in the strands. |

Most jellyfish are not life-threatening, but this one got hugged by a "sea wasp" aka Chironex fleckeri. It can easily be fatal.  |
