Founders of ancient religions/systems of thought are typically quasi legendary figures. This doesn't mean that these people didn't exist, but rather that the pictures which we have of them are largely those built up and embellished by their followers. For instance, when the Hebrews invaded the region of (what we now call) Palestine, they would have had a leader. Perhaps his name was even "Moses". Yet this would not authenticate the various stories told about him on the Old Testament.
