Senior in high school, man. She was several months into 18 when she hung herself. The guy was 2 years older than her and they started dating when she was 16 and he was 18. Not really such an odd situation. An age difference of only two years (especially 18 vs 20) wouldn't even be a big deal in the States. Much less so in Thailand. |

Re: Thai Girl Killed Herself Over Breakup
The photo sure doesn't look like it's in a hospital setting (with kids standing around and watching), and those aren't medical personnel attending to the girl. So what's up with that? I'll take a guess. The medical people have already checked her out and told the family that there is nothing they can do - she's dead - and then just left her lying there on the floor for them to deal with as they have more important things to attend to.

Re: Thai Girl Killed Herself Over Breakup
Not putting your Thai translation skills up against mine, by any means. I certainly defer to your knowledge of both the language and the customs taking place. But she's still wearing the clothes described in the article as being worn when she hung herself. Her shorts are even still rather obviously wet from her bladder evacuating when she asphyxiated. She's also not displaying any livor mortis or blanching on her arms or legs. That array of factors would lead me to believe that the photo taken of her lying on the floor was likely taken very shortly after death. Wouldn't the funeral be at least a day or two later (and in fresh clothing)? Or is that delay not customary in Thailand? |

Re: Thai Girl Killed Herself Over Breakup
I have been to a few funeral in Thailand. The latest was my grandma's. She died at the hospital and her body was move into a different area within the hospital to be embalm. There's no funeral home in Thailand and no fancy machine to replicate heartbeats, just a man with a syringe and formaldehyde. The nurses stuffed cotton into her mouth and eyes. The family go to a casket store to pick one out, take it to the temple that the funeral will be held in. Then the body is transported to the temple, usually still in the same clothes. Some people can't afford to have the body embalm and will only do a 1 day funeral so they skip the embalming procedure. Family pick how many days you want the funeral to be, 3-7 days is usually the norm. The body is kept over night at the temple and the funeral starts the next morning. The day of the funeral, family bring in clothes for the deceased, flowers, one giant picture of the deceased (usually in black and white), and food for the guests. My grandma's funeral was 5 days. Afterward her body was cremated. Then her ashes were put inside an urn and given to the family. Some relatives were even digging into her ash with their bare hands, picking out a big piece of bone to keep (they would put them inside jewelry or a Buddhist's alter inside their home.) I took a bunch of pictures of her funeral. I got to find them! But yea the inside of a temple looks like that picture. I've been to so many and they all look exactly the same in the inside. My guess is they pronounced her dead after she got to the hospital so they bring her to the temple immediately to arrange her funeral.
