Well...I can tell you first hand that they're quite effective at reasonable distances. With the more modern ammunition, bullet designs, and powder refinement (Hornady Critical Defense comes to mind) the good old .38 Special in "+P+" is actually better ballistically than any of the older .357 Magnum loads. I usually carry a titanium, five shot, hammerless, S&W revolver cleared for "+P+" charges. I use the Hornady Critical Defense loads and I found them to be very very effective at combat distances. The penetration is excellent and the new powders are designed specifically for shorter barrels and have a built in reduced muzzle flash and recoil. These new bullet and powder designs are the primary reason the FBI and other agencies are starting to revert back to the 9mm round...there's just no comparison with the bullets and loads of today even with those of ten years ago. I'm a big believer in the .45 ACP, but the new stuff makes the traditional advantages of the .45 almost moot. The only thing wrong with a small J-Frame .38 Special is that it only holds five rounds...that's it though. Just remember...more bad guys have been killed with a .38 Special and a .45ACP than all the other handgun loads put together.  |
