Teenage Girl Hangs Herself in Mango Tree
This teenage girl told her parents she was going out for a walk, but was found shortly thereafter by a passerby, hanging from a mango tree on the side of her house. The story alleges that the suicide was due to a recent break-up. Khmer is a tough-as-nails translation effort, so details aren't any more in-depth than what I have given. But I think they're accurate to this point. Obviously, her body has been cut down in these photos but still lies at the base of the tree where she died. This case is also an interesting commentary towards a point that kellyhound and mort999 were discussing in another thread last week regarding the process for censoring photos and what criteria are used by various agencies when doing so. The discussion was a dialogue about whether they censored based on gender, age, level of gore, or presence of bodily fluids (urine specifically). The images in this set came from four separate news sources. One of them censored nothing at all. One of them censored the girl's entire face, but did not censor the obvious urine stains on her pants. Another one censored her entire face in closeup. And the final one only censored her protruding tongue, which I have never actually seen before and I have no idea whatsoever why they would have done so. Anyway, my only point with this is that there really isn't a lot of rhyme nor reason to the process. I have seen them censor everything from nudity to gore, to urine, to the entire image including nearby terrain, irrespective of age or gender. |

Re: Teenage Girl Hangs Herself in Mango Tree
I think the only reasoning to the censorship can be attributed to the person doing the censoring. One might blur the face to show respect to the family. Another might blur the tongue as sticking out due to the thought that it implies suffering and to ease acceptance by the family or friends. It could be that certain practices in countries or religions that showing a person's face post-death are forbidden or frowned upon as is the case here in the US. |
