You must be fairly young, otherwise you would probably remember just how fashionable dumpster diving was in the United States in the early nineties, during the the 'grunge' trend....

I was on the streets a lot in the 90's and a lot of my friends used to dive but I could never bring myself to do it. It just really grossed me out. That's what Soup Kitchens were for.

Also had a friend who worked at McD's and he would save me the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffins from the end of breakfast. Man that was fucking great
