In my experience, such as it is, strangulation seems to be the preferred method to dispatch women in Cartel kidnappings and executions.

Men are far more often cut up and mutilated, or riddled with bullets. And while that happens plenty with women, as well, strangulation or suffocation with a bag are the most common cause of death for women in Mexico where kidnappings and narco shit are concerned. No idea why.

As you said, it's a pretty cruel and horrible way to die most of the time. Unlike a partial suspension hanging like we often see with suicides (where the hanger passes out in 15 seconds and dies more or less asleep), strangulations tend to be long and agonizing. I have read in numerous postmortems and court testimony of MEs that it can often take upwards of 3-5 minutes to strangle someone to death and they are usually semi-conscious for most of it. There's a lot of thrashing around, usually blood from the nose and mouth, and strangulation homicides are even more likely to piss and shit themselves than hanging suicides. It happens like 90% of the time. So it's messy, smelly, unpleasant, painful, and very labor intensive. The force required to strangle someone to death, whether with ligature or with hands isn't necessarily a great amount, but it is prolonged and can injure the killer's hands rather significantly, as well. Especially if a ligature is used.

You'd almost have to think that they chose it a as a method to increase suffering, though I suppose it isn't any worse than one of those very slow decapitations.

I'm sure the cartel is not a bunch of rookies though. They have the experience to know to use leverage like a turquinet or just pull a zip tie tight around their neck.

Hahahaahha. You need to watch more cartel vids.

Yeah, maybe they had their shit wired tight back when Los Zetas were still paramilitary and Z-7 and Z-9 had control. But these days? Don't get me wrong...they get the job done. But it's not elegant and it isn't even remotely professional. Watch some of the beheading videos sometime. ;) There are still pros in the bunch, of course. But there are a LOT of rookies. Half the guys they have doing hits are like 16 years old.

Further, there is absolutely no sign that this murder was Cartel related. The dad isn't a known affiliate (and there aren't really any 'secret' affiliates on the lower levels) and the victim was a teenage student who went to a college prep school.

Chances are that these were a couple of bumblefuck halfwits who had never staged a successful kidnapping before. Very possible that she was targeted BECAUSE she attended a prep school with a financial entry fee. They just assumed dad had more money than he did. Even if the Cartel has its (dwindling) share of professional criminals left, the thriving Kidnap racket down in Mexico is notoriously amateurish.

There was one case about 18 months ago (no good pics so not posted here) where the idiots left a bag on the victim's head for too long and she suffocated in the trunk of the car while they were driving to the drop.
