Russian tourists Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, were shot dead while sitting in beach deckchairs at Jomtien Beach in Pattaya, Thailand, early on February 24, 2007. A drinks table remained set in front of them, and their belongings were left beside their bodies.

Police arrested Anuchit Lamlert, 24, about a week later. He confessed and took part in a police-staged reenactment at the beach on March 4, one day after authorities presented him at a news conference. Lamlert maintained that he intended to rob the women and shot them when they screamed. Police publicly doubted that account, citing the untouched belongings and surveillance footage that they said showed no attempted theft. Investigators also pursued a contract-killing theory, but the motive remained disputed. Lamlert was later convicted of the murders and sentenced to death.
