A tour coach taking a mainland Chinese group to Taoyuan International Airport caught fire on National Freeway No. 2 on July 19, 2016. About four kilometres from the airport, it crossed lanes and hit a guardrail, then burned for around half an hour. All 26 occupants were killed: 24 Dalian tourists on the final day of an eight-day trip, Taiwanese guide Zheng Kun-wen, and 53-year-old driver Su Ming-cheng. In September 2016, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office ruled out an accident. Investigators found no mechanical or electrical defect and concluded that Su had purchased gasoline, spread it on his seat and on the floor by the exit, then ignited it. His blood alcohol level was 215 milligrams per decilitre. Weeks earlier, a sexual assault conviction against him had been upheld, and he faced imprisonment. Escape was impossible because the rear emergency door was pinned by the damaged guardrail and opened only about ten centimetres, while the coach's escape-door locks could not be operated by passengers from inside. The initially stated date was incorrect, reflecting the posting date rather than the date of the fire.

It happened on 19 July 2016: eyewitnesses said the bus had been giving off smoke and swerving from lane to lane prior to crashing and bursting into flames.
Some said that the driver may have forgot to loosen the hydraulic brake system, so the overheating finally led to a brake failure (which would explain the smoke prior to the impact); other speculated that the circuit fire erupted from the water dispenser and Karaoke equipment near the driver's seat (same as above, but less likely), but there was no official word on the cause of the fire AFAIK.
All them lost their lives because both of the bus' doors were pressed against the highway's guard rail, making them impossible to open, plus emergency door handles may have been distorted by heat. What a shitty way to go.

The emergency doors and exits were blocked or unusable, they had no way of escaping. Poor people. Absolutely horrific way to go.
