When someone purposefully consumes a strong acidic chemical, it causes death by acute destruction from the inside out.

The mouth, tongue, esophagus, stomach, and other nearby tissues become hardened and grey from the external view but remains unscathed at a deeper level.

The deceased here consumed neat sulfuric acid.

A COURT sat in chilled silence yesterday as it listened to a tape of an alleged murderer talking calmly on the telephone over the agonised cries and groans of his victim as she lay dying from the effects of drinking sulphuric acid.



Relatives and friends of the dead woman, Karenina Longe, a 27-year-old hospital doctor, wept as the prosecution used the tape to illustrate the "torments of hell" which she suffered in her final hours.

Andrew Gardner, 40, her boyfriend, forced or tricked her to drink the glass of "almost neat" acid, possibly telling her that it was "a final toast" to their fading love affair, said Stephen Linehan, QC, prosecuting. Then he waited 23 minutes before calling an ambulance as the liquid, a drain cleaner called Plumber's Mate, burnt through her stomach walls and destroyed her internal organs. Mr Linehan said: "It is impossible to imagine what she suffered."

Gardner, who met Dr Longe when he was a medical assistant and she was training to be a doctor at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, is on trial at Birmingham Crown Court where he denies murder. He has told police that she committed suicide by drinking the acid voluntarily.

The four-and-a-half minute tape, played to the jury over the courtroom speakers, was of Gardner's 999 call for an ambulance in which he refers to Dr Longe as his daughter. He was heard to say: "My daughter tried to do something silly and she drank sulphuric acid."

In the minutes that followed he was heard responding to the emergency operator's questions about the woman's condition, saying: "She keeps saying: 'The pain, the pain'." Throughout, Dr Longe's moans and cries could be heard getting ever louder and more distressing.

The call was made from Dr Longe's rented house in Sheldon, Birmingham, on Feb 5. Before Gardner dialled 999 he had made at least six other calls, the prosecution said. These included two to plumbers to ask for advice, two to a drain-cleaning firm, one non-emergency call to a hospital and one to his 15-year-old son by an earlier relationship asking him to come round.

In the first of these, to a local plumber called Paul Smith, he said: "I am out in the sticks and my son has swallowed some drain cleaner. I wonder if you can tell me what was in it." Mr Smith advised him to call an ambulance and Gardner said he had already done so.

Mr Linehan said: "It was all lies. He wasn't out in the sticks, he was in Sheldon. It wasn't his son who had swallowed drain cleaner. And he hadn't called an ambulance. He didn't do so for another 23 minutes. That is 23 minutes during which time that acid continued its dreadful work and she continued, in his sight and in his hearing, to suffer the unimaginable torment of being quite literally cooked by the heat generated by the acid.
"She was suffering the torments of hell. The acid works as a drain cleaner because, if you put it in contact with water, a chemical reaction takes place and there is an immediate build-up of heat. If you pour some into a glass of water it gets hot so quickly you can't hold it. That is what happened inside her."

Dr Longe was finally admitted to Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital, where she had been working as a senior house officer. Her colleagues operated on her but the damage had gone too far. The court was told that Gardner had given up his London job to move to Birmingham with Nigerian-born Dr Longe.

Mr Linehan said: "There is no doubt that at the beginning she was very fond of him." But his fecklessness and drinking led her to cool their relationship, Mr Linehan said, and on the day of the alleged murder, she was believed to have told him that they were finished. Nobody knew precisely what occurred, Mr Linehan told the jury. "You will have to consider whether he forced her to take it or you may come to the conclusion that he tricked her. Perhaps it was a last toast before parting. Before she knew it she had swallowed enough to kill her."

The trial continues.
