Re: Strange Fishes (Drowning People Thread)

If they know it was a drowning death why would they waste time and money doing an autopsy? I would think they had better things to do with their limited resources.

It's usually a requirement of law to perform one in all unexpected deaths. The autopsy will verify that the victim drowned and hopefully show that they were not murdered, such as finding bruises consistent with being held down or drugs in the system.

Absolutely. This is standard procedure in western countries. I was a bit surprised at this degree of thoroughness in a third world country with limited resources. My wife is from such a country, and there is virtually no medical or forensic service in the more rural sections and limited service in the more populated ones.

Re: Strange Fishes (Drowning People Thread)

Ok....WTF is this? It looks like something out of a horror movie... good GOD, it doesn't even look human anymore! I would not want to be the family member to have to identify that body. I don't think I could unsee that.

When I was 19, my boyfriend had an asthma attack while swimming and drowned. When they found him, rigor mortis had set in, his body was clenched up in the fetal position and his face was frozen in this awful mask of pain. I will never forget going in to identify him. They sorted him out for the funeral, and did a great job of it. But 16 years later I still see him on that slab.

It was like he curled in on himself. His face was froze mid gasp. I wish I could post it too. It was a sight.
