Looks like it was possibly a tumor. Don't know how you'd let it get that far, better to remove a small thing than to loose your whole hand.

It reminds me of when people take a rubber glove and blow it up and it kind of balloons...the palm looks like it's filled with air, as odd as that sounds. But yes, that has to be some kind of tumour, and that guy must be in agony. I'll bet it weighed a ton as well judging by the size!
