Because smiling for the camera is the polite thing to do.
There is a famous pic from the US in the 40s I think where a woman is sobbing over her boyfriend/husband who’d just been hauled ashore very dead and very drowned. As she sobs kneeling by his body she spots a photographer..... and smiles. Quite a bizarre photo.

This kind of death baffles me. how fast can a steamroller go that a pedestrian cant avoid it or the driver cant stop it instantly?

most probably she overtook it and lost control right in front of it or she hit it head on.....literally
