There's a second carving knife in the foreground of the image, bet there's an interesting story behind it. Wonder if it was his or the assailant used it to slit his throat as I assume little to blood came out of the head wound.
the knife in the foreground is the same as the one in the head. They already removed it and placed it on the ground for measurement. Odd to see them do that at the scene and not at the coroner's office during autopsy.

Ghost, my brother, that's the same knife the investigators had pulled out of his head and laid it next to a ruler.
