Sri Lanka: Bodies Said to Be LTTE Cadres From the Anuradhapura Air Base Raid
The dead men were described as Tamil Tiger fighters killed by Sri Lankan security forces and linked to the LTTE attack on the Sri Lanka Air Force base in Anuradhapura, North Central Province. The raid started at about a quarter past three in the morning on October 22, 2007, when twenty-one commandos, mainly from the LTTE's Black Tiger unit, struck the base as two light aircraft bombed it. Twenty of the twenty-one commandos were killed. Pictures of the bodies were widely circulated and promptly disputed. Witnesses and journalists said the dead were stripped and transported on garbage tractors to the Anuradhapura mortuary. A military spokesman said the circulated material was fabricated and accused someone of altering it to discredit the army. Pro-LTTE outlets gave a competing version of the raid. The caption linked to this material is dated June 2009, twenty months after the raid and after the war had ended, and corresponds to no documented operation. It may have been taken from a gallery reposted in 2009, but this cannot be established, leaving the identities of the men unresolved. |
