South African BBQ
Are South Africans ungrateful or just psychotic The recent attacks on foreigners in South Africa have left many of us shocked. It is not just the level of violence that has shocked us, but the very fact that black South Africans would have so much hatred for their African brothers, who in not so distant memory, stood with them in the fight against apartheid. Zimbabwe in particular, put its neck out in support for South Africa. Does the recent wave of xenophobic attacks reflect the ungratefulness of the black South Africans, or a deeper social psychosis that black South Africa may be suffering from, after all the violence they experienced, observed, and were engaged in during the days of apartheid. I was reminded of the movie Sarafina, as I looked at images of the man being burned alive. Obviously, the black South Africans are not as moved by the thought of burning a human being alive, as the rest of us are. After-all, this is how they fought for their freedom and dealt with perceived traitors amongst their ranks. |
