Songgoriti Crash 2009: Victim Photos, Kota Batu, Indonesia
Nine university students were killed in the early hours of April 16, 2009, when their Daihatsu Taruna left Jalan Panglima Sudirman in Kota Batu, East Java, Indonesia, and struck a roadside tree. The four men and five women were returning toward Malang after attending a birthday party at a rented villa in the Songgoriti area. All nine occupants died, including the driver, 24-year-old Anang Kosim. Police attributed the crash to a blowout of the left rear tire on a downhill stretch of road. Investigators said the tire was worn thin, dated from 2000 and likely burst after striking a crack in the asphalt. Police also cited high speed and overloading as contributing factors. The compact five-seat SUV was carrying nine people, and investigators found no evidence of hard braking before impact. Police later halted the investigation because the driver, who would have been its subject, had died in the crash. |
