A Slow, Agonizing Death Caused By Radiation
Hiroshi Ouchi was a Japanese nuclear worker who worked at the Tokaimura plant. On September 30, 1999 an accident occurred when he was instructed to dump a bucket containing uranium into a precipitation tank. As a result, he was exposed to 20 Sieverts of radiation, nearly twice the lethal dose (8 Sieverts). Doctors knew right away that he would not make it, although this was unlike any case they had ever seen before. Hiroshi was kept alive for 83 days while medical personnel performed various experimental procedures, such as skin grafts and stem cell transplants, in an attempt to improve his condition. All of these proved unsuccessful, as his chromosomes were obliterated from the massive dose of radiation he had received. For the first week, Hiroshi didn't complain to the staff in charge of his care, even while experiencing the most extreme agony imaginable. After the first week passed, however, he broke down and said to one of the nurses that he couldn't take it anyone and that he is not their guinea pig. His pleas for death were denied, despite doctors knowing that he wouldn't be able to be cured anyway. Hiroshi eventually lost the ability to speak, and so had no way of convincing hospital staff to let him die. His skin fell off. Eventually, his muscles turned to liquid, and nurses had to bandage them to prevent Hiroshi from literally falling apart. His heart stopped 3 times during his 3-month ordeal, and each time nurses revived him. Finally, after 83 days of hell on earth, death came to embrace Hiroshi, putting a final end to his misery.
