The discovery of a corpse yesterday has starkly marked the third day in a row of cleaning the Bolivian lake Uru Uru, contaminated by thousands of plastic waste and by the sewers that also lead to mining waste.

The images of a human silhouette formed with clothes and slippers on the floor of the lake beach, among which only bones were visible, have been widely published on social networks and have caused astonishment.

"We have identified skeletal remains. We do not know exactly more details, they are human skeletal remains," Police told the media.

The finding prompted the Special Crime Fighting Force, a specialized arm of the Police, to be required to establish "the data and sex of the corpse" based on laboratory studies.

The Police did not want to advance criteria in relation to the way in which that body arrived at that place, however it announced an investigation to determine the context of the death and the abandonment of the body in that place.

The impression that the find has generated is even worse than that initially had of the desolate place abandoned for several years and where, according to local environmental activists, waste of all kinds has been accumulating.

It is not a garbage dump, it is a lake, Lake Uru Uru in Bolivia. A sea of ​​plastics covers it. Tons of man-dumped bottles that ended up in a 214-square-kilometer lake now reduced by drought to just 30 square kilometers.

The body is completely decomposed. You can only see the clothes and their bones, that shows that cleaning has not been done here for a long long time.

Yesterday the cleaning of waste on the banks of Lake Uru Uru, three kilometers south of Oruro, continued for the third consecutive day, a task in which tens of tons of garbage on the surface has been removed while the same remains below the swampy resin that has accumulated from sewage from the Tagarete canal.

This water mirror, formed by the overflow of the Desaguadero River in the middle of the last century, together with its southern neighbor, Lake Poopó, make up a rich ecoregion dedicated to fisheries in which there are some 76 species of native birds, among them 120,000 flamingos and endemic plants.

This lake region was declared a preservation site twenty years ago , based on a convention that seeks to preserve wetlands of international importance.

Not just there. All water bodies near population centers are full of trash. Sure it is probably worse in the 3rd world countries, but it is everywhere. There are way too may feral people everywhere - meaning there is no civic responsibility and no personal accountability for discarding rubbish on a massive scale.
