Si Quey: Thailand's First Serial Killer, Displayed at Siriraj Museum
Born Huang Lihui in Shantou, China, around 1927, Si Quey worked as a gardener in Thailand and was regarded as the country's first serial killer. His January 1958 arrest followed the killing of 8-year-old Somboon Boonyakan. Between four and six child murders from 1954 to 1958 were attributed to him, as were claims of cannibalism that he reportedly denied. He was put to death by firing squad at Bang Kwang Prison on September 16, 1959. His embalmed remains were exhibited at the Siriraj Medical Museum in Bangkok for six decades. Following a public petition, the exhibition was removed in August 2019, and the body was cremated in July 2020. Subsequent reassessments have raised doubts about his conviction, noting that he did not speak Thai and gave his confession through interpreters, that relatives of some victims challenged his guilt, and that anti-Chinese sentiment at the time is cited as a factor.

Re: Si Quey: Thailand's First Serial Killer, Displayed at Siriraj Museum
Thailand has got it right with this. This is far more effective in curbing capital offenses than the death penalty alone. The reason being is that no one, wants their memory desecrated. Its the ultimate humiliation. Imagine, after you have been killed and mummified, your wife/gf/ children go to this museum see your body. They would be ashamed to see it hang beside your offense. Your children would be ridiculed at school, and wife/GF would want to forget you. To maximize the insult, the bodies should be dressed up in ridiculous costumes! |
