Depends on the shotgun load. The grain and shot type as well as the gauge. Some of the lesser injuries were likely .410 Bore Birdshot low grain while more serious ones are 12 Gauge Buckshot high grain.

no. its all a function of distance. the gas ball that comes out of the end of a gun is huge. if that gas ball enters your body, ie, you are close enough to the blast, then you suffer an internal gas expansion(explosion), as well as the lead. all lead does is make ya bleed. sticking a shotgun in your mouth/against your head is like biting a grenade.
