No matter how, who, or why, this is a very sad scene. Assuming this was his dwelling, the child's bed, shoes and toys tell me a child is gonna be missing their father.

Re: Shot Several Times by a 12 Gauge Shotgun.

Doubt it. The visible injury is from birdshot to the back of the lung. The shot spread is quite large and there's no visible bruising or injury from the wad.
Definitely not a point-blank or close range shot and probably a slow and painful death if the shooter was not aiming for the head.
I think more like a number 4,5, or 6 game load. Number 7.5,8, and esp 9 are really tiny. But you are right about the range I think.. it wasn't close. I am thinking inside 20 yards though based on the spread of the shot and the fact the whole plastic wad or column of shot didn't just make a jagged hole in him.

guess you don't know what stippling is. go read more.

this was close enough for powder burns, and probably came from a homemade or sawed off double barrel pistol for example.

Re: Shot Several Times by a 12 Gauge Shotgun.

Could be a birdshot blast to the front of the body from close up.

Birdshot acts like a frangible slug when fired close enough to the target.

That might account for the amount of blood on the mattress.

And a birdshot blast to the back from a greater distance which would account for the wide patterning on the back.

Just speculatin'...
Speculation, accurate! Bird-shot will definitely cause that tissue damage. Good eye.

All in all, his corpse is in remarkably good condition for having been "shotgunned" several times.
