From the extensive power burns and soot residue on the left side of his face I say it was a black powder gun...with homemade powder as well. I can't see what type of lock plate (flint or percussion) is on the right side of gun, but diffidently black powder...you can see the ramrod under the barrel. Very slow and inefficient ignition based on the poor quality of the powder...but did a wonderful job on the guy...looks like maybe between a .32 to .45 caliber based on the entry wound.
