Looks to me, as an amateur expert coroner guy - fully trained at DR and by shooting lots of guns as a career redneck, that he was hit by a shotgun. The smaller holes are from the pellets and the larger ones are from the wadding.
Total shotgun wound bigger hole is the wading rest is bird shot.

Really shitty way to go
