MIRI (April 15): The Miri police today shut down claims that a shooting case occurred at Desa Pujut 2, Permyjaya here where a few photos and video on the incident made rounds on social media.

District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident was actually a fighting case among a group of men, which happened on April 14 at 12.15am at Vista Perdana Miri.

“Following a fight at a bistro, the victim fled the scene but was chased by a group of men who are his business partners.

“A team of personnel from the Miri district police headquarters rushed to the scene and arrested 11 men aged between 19 and 40 for further investigation,” he said in a statement.

Alexson added that the incident had been recorded by the public, which resulted in it being circulated on social media where some speculated that shooting was involved.

“IPD Miri denies (this claim) and would like to stress here that there was no shooting involved.

“The public is advised not to spread the video on the incident. Actions under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 will be taken against individuals found circulating the video,” he said.

Alexson reminded the public not to take any laws into their own hands and no one should be allowed to use violence and gangsterism to resolve any disputes.

He said this fight could have been avoided if all parties involved thought rationally.

“Members of the public who have any information related to the incident are urged to come forward to the nearest police station or contact investigating officer Inspector Zulaikha Mohd Anuar at 085-433730.”
