I thought the same at first but the description of how she stabbed the son (chest, face, head) doesnt sound like a mercy killing. This is a woman in a frenzy, disconnected from reality. I imagine she had some serious shit going on, maybe past trauma, and certainly a psychotic episode. It's just extremely fucked up.

I have personally witnessed someone have a psychotic episode in real life. It builds up slowly and then suddenly explodes. Lucky for me, the person i knew just scratched stuff into my door with a knife and sent me pictures of their poop. They then ran off down a busy high street, throwing their possessions into the road whilst stark bollock naked. Thankfully they were locked up before hurting someone.
