The Shocker's Mix 13

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Woman shot in the face at close range with a rifle.

This woman was shot in the face at close range with a bullet from a 30.06 rifle in a homicide. No further info.

In the case of a high-powered firearm, the amount of force generated by the blast is so large that a shot fired with the weapon in contact with the head causes extensive destruction. Head injuries from shotguns and high-powered rifles are typically quite devastating, often with extensive soft tissue destruction, skull fractures, and pulpifaction of the brain. Occasionally, the brain is largely expelled from the cranial vault and may be found near the body.

Fig2.2 Gases exit the barrel before the projectile. As a result, the gas collides with bone tissue & causes expansion of the subcutaneous space with tearing & laceration of the skin.

Nassau County, New York. This individual has a stellate-shaped contact wound to the head, stippling, and soot deposit. No further info. In contact gunshot wounds with bony tissue underlying the injury, the injuries are typically called a stellate wound, where the gases exit the barrel before the projectile. As a result, the gas collides with the bone tissue, resulting in the reflection of the gases. This gas causes the expansion of subcutaneous space and pressure, which results in an explosive injury, tearing, and lacerating the skin and subcutaneous tissue, resulting in the stellate wound. Additionally, the expanding gases also cause a back-splatter of soft-tissue and blood onto the firearm and fingers.

In a hard contact wound, gas expansion within the subcutaneous tissues may result in a muzzle imprint (abrasion resembling the shape of the muzzle = Werkgartner mark) or in an irregular, stellate appearance with a central defect and radiating lacerations (typically seen in gunshot wounds to the head).

Stippling (or powder tattooing) is red to orange or brownish punctate abrasions surrounding the entrance wounds as a result of pieces of gunpowder expelled from the barrel and striking the skin. Soot deposition is due to the carbon produced by the combustion of the gunpowder that exits the barrel and deposits on the skin surrounding the entrance wound.

Fig3.1 Skin slippage, lividity, and marbling.

Chicago, Illinois. This photo illustrates decomposition, skin slippage, lividity, and marbling. No further info. Skin slippage is something that happens in decomposition. It is when the superficial layers of the skin “slip” off of the body. It occurs early in decomposition, in temperate conditions usually it starts around the two to three day mark and its appearance can be varied.

Livor mortis or lividity is the gravitational pooling of blood in the dependent parts of the body, both externally in the skin capillaries and venules but also in the internal organs. A phenomenon known as “marbling” occurs when certain types of bacteria found in the abdomen “migrate” to the blood vessels, causing them to assume a purple-greenish tint.

Fig4.1 Suicidal smothering.

New York, NY. This photo depicts a victim who has been smothered. She committed suicide by placing a plastic bag over her head and tying it around her neck. No further info about this case.

Smothering and suffocation are often used interchangeably, but the term "smothering" is best used for that form of asphyxia in which the nose and mouth are obstructed e.g. by a hand/ paper, clothes, pillow, plastic bag etc. Gagging people to keep them quiet may lead to smothering. Signs of asphyxia are commonly absent or are only slight/ and because marks of injury may be few—if any at all— homicidal smothering may be difficult to diagnose.

Fig5.3 Livor mortis or lividity is the gravitational pooling of blood in the dependent parts of the body.

Livor mortis or lividity is the gravitational pooling of blood in the dependent parts of the body, both externally in the skin capillaries and venules but also in the internal organs. Lividity may not be seen in bodies that are very anemic at death.

Since livor mortis can be cleared with pressure, objects pressing against the skin when livor forms can cause a pattern. This individual was lying on an “egg crate” foam mattress when he died. The foam tips of the mattress touched the skin and cleared the livor, while the cups of the mattress allowed the livor form.

Fig6.2 The original black and white image.

Turkey. A 54-year-old male was found murdered in prison by his cellmate. Examination of the scene and the autopsy findings revealed that the victim was strangled with a nylon ligature, a piece of a wooden handle of broom was forced into his left eye and the nail of a cloth hanger was inserted into his right eye. His left arm, forehead, nose and ears were slashed with a razor blade. I colorized the original black and white image.
