Re: Semi-Truck+Ford Fiesta=Human Gravy
The problem here is one of speed. The Fiesta driver was simply not going fast enough. If the truck was carrying a typical load at 55 mph, its kinetic energy would be about 11 MJ. For a Fiesta to have that much kinetic energy, it would need to be moving about 295 mph. Now, obviously, hitting a truck going 295 mph in a Fiesta would result in the Fiesta driver being transported to the morgue in a 5-gallon bucket. The Fiesta has to be going way faster than that; it has to be going fast enough to create the sheer stress to cut the truck lengthwise with a 5.5-foot-wide Fiesta-blade while maintaining the Fiesta-blade's structural integrity such that the occupant sits serenely inside the cabin, unmolested lethal forces. After estimating the length and shear strength of the materials the Fiesta would have to pass through to bisect a truck carrying a load of cotton t-shirts, I applied the formula needed to cut the materials in half with a hack saw, Fc = zc*kz*A*f. Taking into account that the blade is 5.5 feet wide and can't deform significantly - this part is what really requires a lot of speed - I ended up making a Fermi estimate that the Fiesta would need to be travelling a bit over 230,000 mph. While that is far faster than a rail gun, Saturn V rocket, or the Voyager probes, it is possible to reach such speeds in a man-made object with a significant gravity boost. The Parker Solar Probe launched in August of last year will hit speeds almost twice that fast when it slingshots around the sun. So, there you go. It's the driver's fault - anyone who smashes into a truck without slingshotting around the sun is a moron. |

Re: Semi-Truck+Ford Fiesta=Human Gravy
I am so dumb. For some absurd reason when I read your post I immediately pictured one of those old big phones with the rotary dials and the long curly cords like my Gma had! Lol! I had to go back & look at the pic again bc I truly wondered how I cd have possibly missed seeing something like that! Lol! |
