What I'm guessing- self-punishment for letting themselves get into such a situation? Showing the inner pain on their bodies to let the world know what they went through? So no other asshole finds them attractive so they don't have to marry again? I dunno-all I do know is that this was THEIR choice, no one else's; they finally found some sort of control, which is pretty sad.

So...it seems that more pain is their solution to their pain...odd. When I get a headache I reach for analgesics not weapons or hammers. I understand their solution is not as available, but their self-immolation doesn't work either. Maybe they should try burning the men instead.
