Schoolteacher Hangs Herself
Bangladesh, unsurprisingly. Pretty textbook suicide routine here. Angry/frustrated/bullied wife hangs herself from a fan. Her family insists it was murder. Investigation yields nothing. In this case, as in many, her family is especially suspicious because (wait for it)...her feet and knees are touching the floor. In most parts of south Asia, Partial Suspension hanging ALWAYS equals murder. Anyway, looks like a fairly typical hanging suicide to me. Tongue is swollen and protruding, fingers are curled up. I suppose she could have been killed and hanged postmortem, but it'd take a lot of work. I usually rank out such theories when urine is visible beneath hanger, since it typically means they actually died in that position and were on that spot when their bladder emptied (as it almost always does in hanging deaths). But due to the positioning of her clothing and the camera angles, I can't tell in this case. So could go either way. |

Re: Schoolteacher Hangs Herself
~ When someone hangs theirself, so close to the ground, they do it just in case they change their mind. I don't think she wanted to change her mind if she forced herself to die. ~ Probably out of a job, & that's all she ever lived for, to be a great teacher. |

Re: Schoolteacher Hangs Herself
Well, all these posts reassure me that I'm NOT going to be decapitated in my sleep by my ceiling fan. Those installers in Pakistan must be pretty thorough in their work. But now I'm thinking: "Mine WASN'T installed by a Pakistani Super Fan Installer. Instead, I got a beer drinking, slightly high American who probably didn't even put all the screws in!" So now I'm worried again! |

Re: Schoolteacher Hangs Herself
Do death by strangulation and hanging look the same to the coroner? Maybe if someone strangled her and staged the scene to look like this? I doubt it was murder but would this be possible for someone to pull off?

Re: Schoolteacher Hangs Herself
No, a competent coroner won't mistake the two. Strangulation with hands usually leaves a fractured hyoid bone, which is a sure sign of manual strangulation. Strangulation with a ligature leaves deep ligature marks on the neck because the victim is fighting so the murderer has to pull very tightly. Defensive wounds would probably also be present even if they're just scratches or traces of the murderer's skin under her fingernails. Hanging like this wouldn't fracture the hyoid bone and the marks on the neck from the scarf wouldn't be deep. |
