Salvadoran Refugee Killed By Police During Misdemeanor Arrest

Kind of surprised this one hasn't been here yet. It's been making international news for a week, especially with the ongoing trial in America that bears some similarities. Protests have been raging in Mexico for days now, but I guess it just isn't as newsworthy as when it happens in America.

In any case, this 36 year old woman was living in Mexico on a refugee Visa after fleeing El Salvador. The proprietor of a gas station called for police because she was disturbing the peace. Presumably drunk, she was acting oddly (though not dangerously) by shouting at customers and swinging an empty water jug around as she danced back and forth in the aisles.

After a few minutes of largely harmless antics, she left through the front doors, but was immediately apprehended by four police officers.

The video footage (included below to some degree) is a bit disjointed as it was filmed from different sources and angles.

But the gist is that she sort of resisted. I mean, in a presumed-drunken middle-aged barefoot woman sort of way. No violence, just some rolling around and kicking her feet and yelling. The end result is that she was cuffed behind her back, thrown to the street face down, and pinned in place with an overweight female officer's knee shifting between her back and her neck.

For the first few moments, she flailed her bare feet up and down and looked at the camera shouting for help. She then screamed loudly in pain when the cop shifted weight to her upper back/neck. Shortly thereafter, she stopped moving altogether.
The police, realizing that she was dead, picked up her prone body and threw her in the back of the pickup and drove off.

The autopsy result found that she died of asphyxiation and two of her cervical vertebrae were fractured and separated. Essentially, they knelt on her until they broke her neck and then she asphyxiated. The tox screen to verify that she was drunk (or on anything else) has not yet been released and may still be pending.

All four officers have bene removed from duty and an investigation is undergoing. Cops usually get away with whatever they want in Mexico, including a shitload of corruption, but this one has a lot of media attention down there so there's a chance there'll actually be an investigation of some consequence.

And while both the circumstances and the media draw obvious parallels to the Floyd case, please keep your discussion topical to this event. We have ongoing threads in this forum already for both Floyd's death and Chauvin's trial. so take discussion about that case to those threads and please do not highjack this thread with a bunch of ranting about Floyd.

Ta. There are probably another fifty pictures and dozen related videos that I didn't mess with. But the case is very easy to find for anyone looking to research it more thoroughly. Happened in Tulum.

Indeed. That's a large aspect of the complaints being lodged. They basically killed her through poor training/carelessness and then when they saw she wasn't breathing they just picked her up and chucked her like a garbage bag into the truck and drove her to the morgue.
