On April 3, 2017, a suicide bomber set off an improvised shrapnel device aboard a Line 2 Saint Petersburg Metro train as it travelled through the tunnel between Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations. The driver carried on to the following platform, a decision credited with lowering the toll. The blast killed 15 people and the bomber, while injuring dozens. Later that day, a second device, concealed inside a fire extinguisher casing, was discovered and defused at Ploshchad Vosstaniya station. Investigators named 22-year-old Akbarzhon Jalilov as the bomber. In December 2019, a Russian court found eleven men guilty in connection with the attack, sentencing the organizer to life imprisonment.
