The Sabra and Shatila massacre took place in southwest Beirut, Lebanon, between September 16 and 18, 1982, during the Lebanese civil war. Members of the Phalangist militia, a Lebanese Christian force allied with Israel, entered the Sabra neighborhood and the adjacent Shatila Palestinian refugee camp and killed civilians over roughly a day and a half, days after the assassination of Lebanese president-elect Bashir Gemayel. Israeli forces held the perimeter of the camps. Estimates of the dead range from several hundred to more than 3,000; no definitive count exists. Israel's Kahan Commission found the state indirectly responsible in 1983 and found Defense Minister Ariel Sharon personally responsible for failing to prevent the killings, and he resigned that post.
