Rwandan Refugee Stampede at Zaire Border, July 1994: 100+ Crushed
Albert Facelly of Sipa Press, on assignment for Newsweek, took these photographs. They received second prize in the Spot News Story category of the 1995 World Press Photo contest, and the first post reproduces the award caption. The photographs were made in July 1994, as Rwandan refugees fled into eastern Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After three mortar rounds struck near a border crowd, people panicked and fled; more than a hundred were crushed and trampled to death. The caption neither identifies who fired the mortars nor does any source name them. None of those killed has been identified. This incident was a crowd crush during the border crossing, not the genocide itself, which had ended weeks earlier, or the cholera epidemic that later that month killed tens of thousands in camps around Goma. I cannot imagine the pain, and all that death in the air... these photos are haunting. We're given one life, it really is surreal how much suffering and pain some people endure. |

here's an idea, go trample the mouthfuckers shooting at you. These tinpot dictators love this shit. Hordes of refugees flee and dumbass western nations suck them up. Dictators get rid of undesirables rather than have them fight for their freedom. Meanwhile, western nations suck it up, tax their citizens more, lose their unique cultures and kowtow to demands from lame asses that wouldn't fight.   |
