Actually, Meridian, this is what happens when parents fail to realise they're raising children to adulthood, rather than raising small adults to largehood, and thus fail to deal with how kids actually think in the process. Lara's point about Romeo and Juliet is a great one, but lost on any number of posters, sadly. I'm guessing it would've been lost on the parents of these two, as well.

Parents are raising children to become responsible adults. A NO also fits into that category.

Wait, what? Mother says no to her daughter’s request for a sleepover, daughter concludes mother is ruining her life, goes on a shooting spree before killing herself and that’s the mother’s fault for not understanding how teenagers think?

So she should have said yes to her every request, pandered to her will, set no boundaries?

No parent can ever work on the principle that they must say yes or else little princess will kill herself, and no kid should ever wield that kind of blackmail over their parent.

This is the result of two likeminded angsty teens combining, egging each other on, believing each others’ crap, and it escalating to this.

That's fine, I'm sure that last paragraph is exactly what the parents think after a preventable tragedy, too. Probably a great consolation. No, you didn’t. You said parents failed to realise they were raising kids to adulthood but didn’t give any indication of how they could have played this one differently.

Think you’re avoiding making the effort yourself because you have no actual point to make, just generalisations.
