A federal judge, Vasily Vetlugin, was murdered near the building of the local district court by a soldier, supposedly after the soldier suspected Vasily of having an affair with the soldier's wife.

The soldier, 47-year-old Sergey Kibalnikov, had fought in Ukraine, and had returned to Russia on holiday. Suspecting Vasily of having an affair with his wife, Sergei ambushed the judge outside the courthouse and opened fire on him with a Saiga carbine, before beating him with the weapon and stabbing him repeatedly.

After killing him, Sergey stuck a knife in Vasily's head, and dismembered his penis before stuffing it in his mouth. Sergey then surrendered himself to police - although some news sources raised the probability that he will be sent to fight in Ukraine again, rather than be sent to prison.
