Russia - 3 Dead in Car from Exhaust Fumes

On 8th January 2021 in Priamurye (Russia), 3 people were found dead in car.

A fisherman found a car parked, with it's engine running, on the ice of the Bureyskoye reservoir. The car was covered with tarp to form a canopy. The 3 occupants of the vehicle had died from the exhaust fumes.

It is thought to have been an accident, since the exhaust pipe was outside the makeshift tent. But due to the severe frost, the exhaust pipe had frozen, leaving the fumes to leak into the car.

Poor buggers, though. I bet they had much more they wanted to experience in life.

I have never seen a tail pipe frozen over like that. Good to know that this can happen if ever trapped in a car in freezing weather. Sad but as someone said, a peaceful way to go. Just go to sleep and not wake up.

Was wondering about that myself and this can only happen if the car was not running for a longer period. So i found this being posted on a local whatsapp group:
Quote:
The tragedy that claimed the lives of three fishermen is discussed in WhatsApp groups. People familiar with the deceased report that the owner of the car never or shortly turned on the heating in the parked car, (to save gas) and covered the heated car with a tarp as there was enough warmth already in the cabin until morning.

But on the night of January 9, it was very cold in that area, the temperature dropped below 40 degrees and apparently in the night it was decided to warm up the car. So likely another tube was put on the exhaust pipe and brought out of the canopy but they failed to check for ice in the condensed exhaust.

With modern cars it actually quite difficult to gas yourself because catalytic converters remove a lot of the carbon monoxide

Autos aren't airtight but Carbon-monoxide poisoning because there are too many people closed up in a confined space without sufficient fresh air does eliminate entire families, sometimes. It has occurred inside apartments, especially when gas stove burners are used to heat a 20x30 or less room with 6+ occupants.

Yeah, even more so with Hybrids and EVs that runs entirely on battery power while idle

Must've had an exhaust leak. Engine would've died if the exhaust didn't have holes in it.
