Rollover Kills 9 Including 5 Children on the Chilpancingo-Iguala Highway
A vehicle overturned on a federal highway in Guerrero, Mexico, killing nine people, including five children. An initial account says that four of the children were brothers and that their mother also died. Although its location references appear inconsistent, most can be reconciled. Federal Highway 95 follows the corridor from Iguala to Chilpancingo, passing through the Canon del Zopilote in the municipality of Eduardo Neri before crossing the Balsas River near Mezcala. Rio Balsas and the Chilpancingo to Iguala section therefore refer to the same route. Acapulco does not, because it is far south of Chilpancingo, but it was most likely the wire dateline, since news from Guerrero state is filed there. The Chilpancingo daily Este Dia published the front-page headline Volcadura fatal mueren 9 personas la mayoria ninos. The wording corresponds with the rollover, the nine fatalities and the fact that children formed the majority. However, the issue date could not be read, and no more complete account of the crash was found. I have a feeling some were riding in the bed of the truck. Funny thing that is. In the US, it is illegal to ride a small child in the front seat and not using a seatbelt is just as illegal. But, in many states (Florida being one) it is FINE to ride children, adults, babies (and animals) in the bed of a pick up. How fucked up is that?  |
