(UPDATE 2 - 9:15 p.m.) TACLOBAN CITY - A man initially identified as Atty. Rogelio Bato, a lawyer of controversial Albuera town mayor Rolando Espinosa and his son, Kerwin – now facing charges for drug trafficking – was found dead, with multiple gunshot wounds, inside a Toyota Hilux pickup at around 2:00 pm Tuesday.

An unidentified young woman, still in school uniform, was also found dead near him.

Empty shells of M16 and caliber .45 ammunition were scattered around the crime scene along Barangay Lumbang 2 in this City.

Based on the accounts of witnesses living in the area, the owner of the vehicle with license plate YHH -461 is Atty. Rogelio Bato.

Tacloban police chief Senior Supt Rolando Bade confirmed Bato's identity.

Bato is the lawyer of Mayor Espinosa Sr and his son Kerwin, who is at large and believed to be hiding abroad.

Espinosa Sr. was charged after police raided his house and found an assortment of guns and drugs, while he was about to return to Albuera after trying to negotiate his son Kerwin's surrender at Camp Crame.

The girl, wearing the uniform of Sagkahan National High School, has yet to be named.

The City Police Office's Scene of the Crime Operatives began sifting for clues and documenting the scene.

Initial information indicated that the faces of the victims were showered with bullets as they suffered multiple gunshots.

The young woman suffered most of the multiple gunshots in the face.

After promising to negotiate Kerwin's surrender, the mayor even begged PNP chief Gen. Ronald "Bato" de la Rosa for a safe haven, fearing for his life. De la Rosa let him stay at his quarters in Crame, but let him go after an overnight stay.

Senior Supt. Rolando Bade said that law enforcers will exert utmost efforts to investigate the case and identify the perpetrators and the motive behind the killing.

He said it's too soon to conclude that the incident is related to drugs just because the victim is the lawyer of the Espinosas.

For his part, former IBP Leyte Chapter President Atty. Alberto Hidalgo challenged the government to thoroughly investigate the incident "and come up with a factual and credible result to show to the people of the Philippines that it is not involved in the extra judicial killings."

Hidalgo encourages all lawyers in the country and members of the IBP to wear a black armband while in court until the day of interment of their brother in legal profession.

The act, he explained, is to show their condemnation of the serious affront to the legal system, legal processes and the law profession.

MANILA, Philippines – The lawyer of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. and a minor companion were killed in a shooting incident in Tacloban City on Tuesday afternoon.

Lawyer Rogelio Bato Jr. 42, and his 15-year-old companion was shot dead by still unidentified assailants in Barangay Lumbang 2, Tacloban City around 2:30 p.m.

Among Bato's clients were Mayor Espinosa and son Ronald “Kerwin” Espinosa Jr., recently tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte as involved in the illegal drug trade and for allegedly coddling drug traffickers. On August 3, six of their alleged aides were also gunned down in a police encounter. Espinosa has denied that the men killed near his house worked for him.


The lawyer sustained multiple gun wounds in his leg and chest while his girl companion, who was still in her uniform, was shot in the left side of her face.

At the crime scene, Bato was found slouching in the driver’s seat of his maroon Toyoto Hi-Lux vehicle with plate number YHH 461 while the girl was seated beside him in the front seat.

The vehicle was found with 13 entry bullet holes from an M-16 rifle and a .45 caliber pistol. The authorities also recovered 18 spent M-16 shells, six .45 caliber. shells from the crime scene, three cell phones from inside the victims' car, and files of documents from the lawyer and the girl, which are all subject for investigation.

Director of the Police Regional Office-8 told that Bato was among the police’s high-value targets under the Espinosa group, involved in drug transactions with the Espinosas. He also said the authorities have a witness who said Bato’s car was given by Kerwin himself.

In the report, he said some people are determined to kill them. "They just started by killing our lawyer. Soon we will be the next," he said.

Meanwhile, Tacloban City Mayor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez also went to inspect the crime scene.

We are all outraged by this crime. The challenge posed by the criminals requires other responses, other weapons, and intelligence. There will be no impunity in this matter. No line of investigation will be discarded,” the mayr said.
