On 26th March 2019, 22 year old D.R, a 'promising young student' at the Paragon International University, was killed in a road accident.

The Prime Minister, Hun Sen, had personally ordered the police to identify the driver of the car which took the life of the young lady. Y.G., the father of the driver turned himself in. The car belongs to him but is registered to his daughter, S.P.

P.P., the victim’s mother, said that her daughter 'was a kind soul + that her death was a huge loss to the family'. She said that 'D' was just about to graduate from university. “My daughter was a good girl – she studied hard + never let us down', she said. 'Please, God take me instead of her. I do not know what to do now without her'.
'I hope the authorities will find justice for us'

$5,000 was given by the family of the suspect for 'D’s funeral.

On 29th March, the driver was handed into the police by her father. She had been driving the car at the time of the accident. She, along with her 2 passengers, fled the scene.

Y.K.M., a motorist suspected of killing a university student in a hit-and-run incident in Phnom Penh last month, was admitted to the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital on Monday night because she needed urgent medical attention.

Ms K.M., 16, alias Y.M., was charged with driving without care and attention, and negligence leading to death, over the incident which drew national attention. If convicted, she could be jailed for up to three years and be fined up to $3,700.

She has been in pre-trial detention ever since she turned herself in after Prime Minister H.S. called for the arrest of those responsible for the death of 23-year-old university student D.R.

Hospital director N.M. yesterday said Ms K.M. was ill and needed medical attention.

“The doctor will look after her just like other patients,” Mr 'M' said. “What she’s accused of does not bother us, we prioritise the life of patients.”

Last week, a rumour circulated on social media saying that Ms K.M. was never jailed in the first place due to her influential family. The rumour was dispelled by Cambodian Youth Party president Pich Sros who visited her in prison.

However, other rumours persisted, such as one saying that Ms K.M. might flee detention with the assistance of prison officials.

N.S., spokesman for the Interior Ministry’s General Department of Prisons, said Ms K.M. was sent to hospital because of bronchitis and respiratory congestion.

“It’s not that she was born into a rich family. She is very ill. There was nothing prison officials could have done aside from sending her to be treated in hospital,” Mr 'S' said. “We cannot allow someone to die when their illness could be treated.”

“People wrongly accused us,” he added. “I want them to ask the doctors themselves to see how serious her illness was.”
