Rigor mortis, (Latin: rigor "stiffness", mortis "of death"), is one of the recognizable signs of death, caused by chemical changes in the muscles after death, causing the limbs of the corpse to become stiff and difficult to move or manipulate. In humans, it commences after about three to four hours, reaches maximum stiffness after 12 hours, and gradually dissipates until approximately 48 to 60 hours after death.

At the time of death, a condition called, "primary flaccidity." occurs. Following this, the muscles stiffen in rigor mortis. All muscles in the body are affected.

Starting between two and six hours following death, rigor mortis begins with the eyelids, neck, and jaw. The sequence may be due to different lactic acid levels among different muscles, which is directly related to the difference in glycogen levels and different types of muscle fibers.

Rigor mortis then spreads to the other muscles within the next four to six hours, including the internal organs. The onset of rigor mortis is affected by the individual's age, sex, physical condition, and muscular build. Rigor mortis may not be perceivable in many infant and child corpses due to their smaller muscle mass.

Rigor mortis is very important in meat technology. The onset of rigor mortis and its resolution partially determines the tenderness of meat. If the postslaughter meat is immediately chilled to 15°C (59°F), a phenomenon known as cold shortening occurs, where the muscle sarcomeres shrink to a third of their original length.

back in the early 90s,a neighbor had passed away while sitting in his recliner,we used to work (at this time i was full time plumber for my family) in a local mortuary often,the owner sponsored my racecar at one time,but he wouldnt allow the name on the car,so i painted it in a fluorescent yellow under the car,what i do?..i turned it over in the trophy dash as we came for the green no less,so it was directly infront of the grandstands right where my family and this owner were sitting...he just looked at my dad and said....when he turns 21..hes buying the booze for the cabin for the entire year..lol..amnd i did..anyway..this dead neighbor was in full rigor in the prep room in the mortuary,and they had him in his recliner for some reason...anyway..i walked past th doorway and looked in,saw him and said...well hello mr queen,whut ya doin in there?....so a guy in the office behind me says...hi davey,im dead ya dumbass...............i felt like an idiot...

So much gore and blood, poor people... many of them had violent deaths, some asked for it, some didn't ... but heck, what's life without death, right?..imagine if no one would die, this world would be a true nightmare, we would have to invent death just to get more earthly space! I am so glad that the Great Equalizer does exist! Death, the Bitch of all the bitches, the one who doesn't care if you are rich, poor, ugly, fat, young, old, white, black, short, tall, women, men, animal, bacterium... whatever, She will take you if it's your time, wanted or not! There, I finally said it, got a little philosophical, but oh well, it's a way to cope with this strangely beautiful-hideous natural phenomenon called Death ...
