Police photographed Rachel Whitear at the scene after the 21-year-old English student was discovered dead in her bedsit in Exmouth, Devon, on May 12, 2000. A syringe was still in her right hand. She had been dead about two days when found and had struggled with heroin addiction since 1998. In 2002, her family permitted the photograph to be released for a nationwide anti-drugs campaign in UK schools based on the documentary 'Rachel's Story'. The campaign turned it into one of the most widely viewed drug-death photographs ever published.

No full resolution was reached in the case. An open verdict was recorded at the first inquest in December 2000. Her body was exhumed in 2004, and a second post-mortem identified opiate intoxication while finding no evidence of third-party involvement. The High Court ordered a second inquest, which concluded with another open verdict in 2007 because the coroner could not determine who had administered the final dose. Her boyfriend, who had introduced her to heroin, was arrested before being released without charge.

originally believed she died from self induced drugs over dose , there are pix missing from this story . Her parents i believe are trying to get the case reopened due to <duh> new evidence. as reported in uk paps
