Quezon City Bus Fire: Passenger Burned Conductor Alive, Both Died (2021)

A bus carrying about 20 people caught fire on January 3, 2021, at Pearl Drive corner Commonwealth Avenue in Barangay Greater Fairview, Quezon City, Philippines. The blaze was reported at 12:39 p.m. and was declared out at 1:20 p.m. It was not an accident: following an argument, a male passenger poured gasoline on the bus conductor and set her alight. The conductor and the attacker died, while four other people were injured, including the driver, who tried to pull the conductor out but was stopped by the flames. Most passengers got out after breaking the windows.

The bodies were initially unidentified because the attacker's belongings were destroyed by fire. About a week later, authorities identified the dead as conductor Ameline "Amy" Sembrana, 45, and passenger Edwin Dejos, 49. A Quezon City Bureau of Fire Protection official said they had formerly been live-in partners and had three children, that the argument involved her new partner, and that Dejos had made Facebook threats against her after she left him. Reports agree that he died in the fire he started, but only one outlet reported that he intentionally set himself ablaze, and this is not confirmed.
