Purge Fluid
During decomposition, bacterial growth in the body's soft tissues, with gaseous formation, leads to 'bloating' of the body. Internal pressures build up, forcing decomposition fluids from the lungs through the mouth and nose ('purge fluid'). This purge fluid is often mis-interpreted as bleeding from injuries by lay people. When I was a mortician, this fluid was a very regular occurence. I once laid out a man for his family to view and the fluid from his nose was torrential! I used the suction machine to suck most of it out of his nose and throat then packed the oral cavities with cotton wool and paper towels This revolting-smelling fluid can sometimes leak out and flood the trays the bodies were lay on..."BARF!!!" · · |
