Earlier this evening, María Daniela Icaza, the director of Ecuador's largest prison Penitenciaría del Litoral, was ambushed and executed while driving back from dinner with a fellow prison official.

According to witnesses, including the driver (Maria was in the passenger seat), the car was blocked in traffic and two men approached and fired several shots through the passenger window, striking and killing the director.

She was not killed instantly and it was originally reported that she had survived and was recovering at the hospital, but that statement was later amended to say that she was pronounced dead when paramedics reached the scene.

She is the second prison director and the fourth prison employee to be executed outside of the prison in the past two weeks. The police have divulged that they believe her assassination was a contract killing.

She was a civilian director hired to run the prison and had asked the government for bodyguards following the recent assaults on other prison personnel. Her request was 'under consideration' at the time she was killed.

That was the first thing to pop out at me, too. He looks way too chill to be in shock. Perhaps he delivered her to the assassin.
